Balsam fir is native to Canada. It grows in the cold mountains of North America. This species of fir can reach 20m in height and can live from 70 to 150 years. The needles are flat, not sharp, fragrant, with two white stripes below. Its 5 to 10 cm purple cones stand upright on the twigs. They ripen in autumn when they lose their scales.
For a long time, this tree has been used by the Indians to fight colds, fever, rheumatism and infection of the respiratory system. In case of cold or asthma, the twigs and their needles were placed on hot embers and the smoke that escaped from them was inhaled.
Yield: around 500g of oil = about 200kgs needles
Chemistry:
- Monoterpenes: beta-pinene (25 to 38%), alpha-pinene (5 to 15%), limonene (1 to 16%), delta 3 carene (2 to 10%)

PROPERTIES OF BALSAM FIR ESSENTIAL OIL
- Respiratory antiseptic: this oil mainly contains monoterpenes, molecules renowned for their antiseptic action
- Anti-inflammatory: increases blood and muscle oxygenation, reduces acidosis, and therefore pain. It can be useful to help you with your treatment of rheumatic and neuralgic pain
- Balsamic: particularly clams inflammation of the respiratory tract. Pinene, the main compound of this oil, show a moderate antimicrobial activity on the viruses involved in viral bronchitis
- Tonic, general stimulant: monoterpenes are molecules that act on all of the body’s functions to keep it in good general condition. Indeed, their cortisone-like properties have an important role in this stimulation

PRACTICE
Skin
To boost concentration and attention: 1 drop of essential oil (diluted) on the inside of the wrists
Upper respiratory tract disorders, winter or nervous fatigue: dilute one drop of essential oil in a carrier oil. Then apply in the evening, on a chest and back massage, before going to bed
Cramp: in local application, on its own or with lavandin, diluted at 10% in St John’s wort macerate
Diffusion
Lack of motivation: on a handkerchief, place 1 drop of balsam fir essential oil, 1 drop of grapefruit and 1 drop of cineole rosemary. Place the handkerchief on the desk while you work

CAUTION

- Do not use it for a long period of time, risk of nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys)
- Skin irritative, do not use purely on the skin. In other words, make a strong dilution in vegetable oil (20% EO in 80% VO)
- As a rule, test the product by applying a little in the crook of your elbow or on your wrist before using it.
