PRACTICE
External use only
- Massage Oil: Dilute comfrey oil with a carrier oil such as coconut oil, almond oil, or olive oil. Use it as a massage oil for sore muscles, joint pain, or areas of inflammation. Apply the diluted oil to the affected area and massage gently until absorbed.
- Compress: Soak a clean cloth or towel in diluted comfrey oil. Then, apply it as a warm or cold compress to areas of pain, swelling, or bruising. Leave the compress in place for 15-20 minutes to allow the oil to penetrate the skin and provide relief.
- Salve or Balm: Mix comfrey oil with beeswax and other soothing ingredients (such as shea butter or cocoa butter). It will create a homemade healing salve or balm. This can be applied topically to minor cuts, scrapes, burns, or skin irritations to promote healing and reduce inflammation.
- Topical Application: Apply a small amount of diluted comfrey oil directly to the skin to target specific areas of pain or inflammation. Rub it gently into the skin until absorbed, and repeat as needed.
CAUTION
- Do not use on pregnant women or young children
- For external use only
- Comfrey oil contains compounds called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). As a result, it can be toxic to the liver and may pose risks when ingested or applied to broken skin.
- Do not ingest.
- Avoid Broken Skin: Avoid applying comfrey oil to open wounds, cuts, or broken skin. Applying comfrey oil to broken skin can increase the risk of absorption of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, potentially leading to liver damage.
- Dilution: Always dilute comfrey oil with a suitable carrier oil before applying it to the skin. Dilution helps reduce the concentration of pyrrolizidine alkaloids and minimizes the risk of skin irritation or sensitization. A typical dilution ratio is 1-5% comfrey oil to carrier oil.
- Generally speaking, scientists recommend a maximum duration of use of six weeks per year, to avoid the risk of this hepatotoxic substance accumulating in the body. Comfrey should not be applied to an uncleaned open wound. Furthermore, its use on a wound is limited to three days.
