Product Description
This preservative protects efficiently against bacterial attacks from any preparation containing water or some vegetable juice (creams, gels, …). It is of synthetic origin but is readily accepted by organic cosmetic companies.
INCI : benzyl alcohol, dehydro-acetic acid, water
PROPERTIES
Broad spectrum anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, it, therefore, stops the spread of bacteria, yeasts, moulds in all cosmetic products containing water.
USAGE
- Preservation of emulsions (creams, milks)
- Preservation of cleansing products (shampoos, shower gels, make-up removers)
Instructions for use
Its usage is very simple: you add it to your preparation following the dosage indicated below.
Recommended dosage for the preservation of your homemade cosmetic: 0,6 % of the total weight of your preparation.
(1 ml = about 30 drops)
EX. for 100ml of product, count 0,6 ml or 17 to 18 drops.

Soluble in water and in alcohol
Not soluble in oil
If your product contains only oily substances (oils, butters, waxes), do not use this preservative. It is preferable in this instance to use EOs at 1,5 % minimum or vitamin E.
PRECAUTIONS
– keep out of reach of children
– do not swallow (harmful), do not inhale, avoid eye contact
– respect the recommended dosage
Beware, benzyl alcohol is potentially allergenic.
We recommend, like with EOs, to carry out an allergy test in the crook of the elbow (test of the finished product or of the preservative diluted at 1%). After that, you need to wait then at least 24 h (ideally 48 h) to notice an eventual reaction.
Good to know
Pure Cosgard is incompatible with PET type plastics.
Do not pour Cosgard in bottles of crystal PET, white PET and blue PET and do not add it to a hydrolat or any other preparation directly into the bottle.
How to go about it:
- Firstly, put the product (hydrolat – non-refrigerated – or preparation at room temperature) in a stainless steel bowl
- Secondly, add the preservative
- Shake vigorously until the Cosgard is completely dissolved
- Pour the product into the bottle
Once the Cosgard is completely dissolved in the preparation, there should be no issue regarding the PET bottle.
PRESERVATION
Keep at room temperature away from dampness and light.
Always remember to close the bottle tightly after use.

The product is good but the dripolator lid allows the contents to dribble down onto the bottle and it strips the black covering which then falls into my formulations. Took me a while to realise where the black bits were coming from. But i love being able to buy this product from your store – perhaps change to a glass dropper lid.
