Manuka is a shrub native to New Zealand. If the prestigious manuka honey is obtained from the flowers, the manuka essential oil is produced with its leaves. In the Maori time, they were boiled in water, sometimes with bark, and inhaled steam to relieve colds, blocked sinuses, asthma and bronchitis. The liquid obtained would also treat joint pain and muscle pain. If it is called Tea Tree in English, it is not to be mingled with the tea tree essential oil, even though they get compared quite often. Indeed the manuka is a powerful anti-infective, mostly bactericidal, making it effective for small infections such as mouth ulcers, herpes, bronchitis, influenza etc. It also is expectorant and atmospheric antiseptic
