Tonka Bean Absolute is obtained from the dried seeds contained in the fruit of a tropical tree, the coumarou, growing in South America. The Dipterix odorata tree is a tropical tree about 30 meters tall. It grows in Brazil, Guyana and Venezuela with pink-purple flowers. The beans are harvested when they have fallen from the tree. Stripped of the pulp of the fruit and dried, the seeds then undergo maceration in alcohol.
The tonka bean is a precious material of perfumery and has recently made its entry into the kitchen thanks to great chefs who have been seduced by this new aroma.
In South American cultures, the tonka bean is considered a good luck charm or is also sometimes used to flavour certain tobaccos.
