Bad little odours in the refrigerator can be caused by the presence of certain foods such as cheese badly wrapped or some leftovers that have been hanging around for too long. This room may have some surprising olfactory elements, but in no way are you going to get rid of your favourite products as a result of this problem. You are scared of opening your refrigerator because it really stinks? Don’t panic. To remove all these unwanted odours from your fridge, we are going to suggest some simple, natural remedies as well as a recipe for some little super simple tablets that will work for you although they will not be a substitute for regular cleaning of your refrigerator and good disposal of leftovers.
How to clean your refrigerator:
Before putting away the groceries, spray the refrigerator with a mixture made of:
A teacup of water + a large tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda + a tablespoon of lemon juice.
Once a week: wipe the interior of the refrigerator and all the rubber joints with a soapy sponge and, twice a month clean it with white vinegar to avoid the spread of germs.
Once a month, use a little bleach diluted in water and rinse thoroughly to kill all bacteria.
Natural tips to remove unwanted odours from your refrigerator or freezer:
Leave in your refrigerator a glass filled with:
- Coffee grounds
- or 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda or 20 cl of white vinegar or cooking salt sprinkled with a dozen drops of lemon
Another thing that works well:
- a wet/wrung towel that has been dipped in vinegar, lemon or a mixture + bicarbonate
- one or two cork stoppers (they have the reputation of retaining bad smells), to be changed every two weeks
Recipe for deodorising tablets to remove unwanted odours
Material:
- Silicone moulds
- 460 g of bicarbonate of soda
- About 80 ml of water
- 20 drops of essential oil
- Lavender, peppermint or citrus EOs are well suited for this because they are linked to food smells. An ideal recipe for recycling your EOs.
Recipe:
1) In a salad bowl, mix all your ingredients: the texture must be similar to wet sand. If it is too dry, add a few teaspoons of water little by little until the texture is perfect.
2) Place your mixture in the silicone moulds and make sure they are firmly packed in with most of the air removed and feeling solid.
3) Leave the tablets to dry at room temperature for at least 2 days.
Usage:
Place a tablet in a corner of your refrigerator and replace it once a month. The tablets can be kept in a glass jar or in an air-tight container.
